
Natural diamonds
Natural diamonds formed deep within the Earth under extraordinary heat and pressure.
Their formation occurred over geological timescales before they were transported towards the surface through volcanic processes.
That natural origin, rarity and geological history form an important part of their appeal.
Laboratory-grown diamonds
Laboratory-grown diamonds are produced in controlled environments using technology that recreates the conditions under which diamond crystal can grow.
The principal methods are HPHT — High Pressure, High Temperature — and CVD — Chemical Vapour Deposition.
The result is crystalline diamond.
Specialist testing can distinguish laboratory-grown diamonds from natural diamonds, and reputable gemological reports identify origin accordingly.
So can you tell by looking?
Not reliably with the naked eye.
Determining whether a diamond is natural or laboratory-grown may require specialised gemological equipment and testing.
That is very different from a diamond simulant such as cubic zirconia or moissanite, which is a different material.
Which is better?
Neither answer should be chosen for you.
Natural diamonds appeal to people who value rarity, geological origin and the idea of something formed by nature over immense periods of time.
Laboratory-grown diamonds can offer a different value proposition and may allow someone to choose a larger or higher-specification stone within a particular budget.
Both can be beautiful.
The important thing is knowing exactly what you're buying.
